Clifton Park Master Plan
Mary Porter, Department of Parks and Recreation, along with Council Members Mary Pat Clarke and Robert Curran met with Mayfield residents at a special general membership meeting on January 17th. Community input into the plans for restoration and improvements for Clifton Park was the purpose. The meeting was held in the sanctuary at St. Matthew’s Church of Christ Cathedral More than 150 people attended the meeting, and 85 residents signed up with email addresses for future announcements. Ms. Porter reported on some of the restoration ideas being considered and some that have already been rejected for road and traffic rerouting in the park. One rejected proposal would have adversely affected traffic for the neighborhood at Norman Avenue and Erdman Avenue. Residents asked questions about plans for Mother’s Garden, the golf course, the band pavilion and Clifton Mansion. Many reminisced about the park when they were younger. Both Clarke and Curran pledged their full attention to the park plan and other matters that affect the neighborhoods bordering Clifton Park. Ms. Porter received warm applause at the end of the special general meeting. The Master Plan committee will have many public meetings for community input and will host public comment sessions as their work progresses. For more information, contact JoAnn Trach Tongson, Mayfield’s liaison member to the Clifton Park Master Plan committee. Want to get involved in this issue? 75 years young!
Mother’s Garden, the lovely garden in honor of all mothers was built 75 years ago this year. This is milestone to be remembered. Mayfield is considering doing something special to mark this occasion to bring attention to this beautiful Northeast landmark. If you’re interested in this project or other beautification projects that Mayfield volunteers undertake, please contact JoAnn Trach Tongson, who is spearheading our efforts. jtrachtongson@mahanrykiel.com

The NEW Neighborhood Watch Program – NorthEast Citizens on Patrol (NECOP)
The NorthEast Citizens Patrol is a volunteer group committed to helping reduce crime in the neighborhood. The Patrol is a partnership between Harbel Community Organization, representing 25 community associations, and Baltimore City’s Northeast District Police. NECOP is being re-initiated in Mayfield under new leadership with a serious game plan to maximize resident participation in an effort to keep our neighborhood safe. Sarah and Jeremy Koser, assisted by Natalie and Kevin Keegan, are the recently named coordinators of NECOP for Mayfield. They need the support of volunteers like you to make this important crime prevention strategy a success. The Mayfield Improvement Association board members are leading the way and have pledged to participate in Mayfield NECOP at least one night a month, but more volunteers are needed to patrol during peak crime periods. Target days are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, from approximately 7:30pm – 10:30 or 11pm. It is recommended that volunteers work in pairs. You can volunteer with a partner or we will pair you with another volunteer. To find out more about NECOP here in Mayfield, contact Sarah at skoser@eaest.com or Natalie at nkeegan@air.org.

Mayfield NECOP volunteers on patrol will serve as the eyes and ears of this community and have direct access to the police to report any suspicious activity. Through the active display and involvement of vigilant and concerned neighbors, we can keep Mayfield a safe and wonderful place to live.

Ready to volunteer? Click here to sign up.

You can help in other ways too.

· Report by Email mayfieldmcgruff@gmail.com any some safety concern, incident or suspicion so others in the neighborhood are alerted right away.
· Not on the list-serve? Email mayfieldmcgruff@gmail.com and sign up to receive updates.
· Keep your front porch light on. The street looks dark at night when front porch lights are off.
· Keep your back yard light on.
· Focus lights on the alley behind your home.
· Keep all the lights on all night long - This helps both NECOP volunteers and the police have better sight access to the neighborhood.
· Use high efficient long – life low wattage bulbs in house lighting. Individuals prone to vandalism or other criminal behavior will usually avoid areas that are well lighted.
· Keep a passive car restraint/lock [club] on your car.
· Keep valuables out of sight (including your purse) in your home.
· Keep your doors locked even when you are out in the yard working.
· Don’t give thieves encouragement. Put bicycles, lawn mowers, power tools etc. out of sight in a locked basement or garage.
· Etch your driver’s license number on items so that they can be traced to you. This also discourages thieves from taking these items to sell to a fence.
